Puppets in the Hands of a Malevolent God
October 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24,25
Celebrate the spooky season with two bone-chilling tales of horror brought to you by Post Productions at The Shadowbox Theatre . . . if you dare!
Post Productions is poised to resurrect the disturbingly satisfying horror genre of Grand Guignol, which ruled France’s theatre scene for decades. Puppets in the Hands of a Malevolent God is a double-bill of spine-tingling one-act plays designed to elicit new insights by delving into the deepest recesses of human terror and discomfort — intertwining psychological horror, body horror, supernatural horror, sociopolitical horror, and existential horror. You can count on Puppets in the Hands of a Malevolent God to stir your emotions in the most raw and visceral manner possible while inspiring you to think about the pressing problems of our time through the incisive probing of ancient human taboos.
Puppets in the Hands of a Malevolent God offers two frightening plays for the price of one! In The Cuckoo Birds, Lucy, a young woman fleeing domestic violence seeks safety in a women’s crisis shelter. As secrets about her life gradually spill out of her, they unexpectedly resonate with the primordial beliefs of other women in the shelter – until Lucy fears that her haven may be her undoing . . . a ghastly trap from which she cannot escape. The second play, Mothers of Nothing, focuses on a group of mothers who gather in their parish church for a funeral reception following the untimely death of one of their sons. When violence erupts amongst the altar boys, and the priest is unable to help, the mothers are forced to confront truths that not only contradict their deepest beliefs but threaten their maternal identities.

With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
